THE VAN PLAN

START HERE.

Nobody has ever woken up and suddenly become a successful businessman, sports star or famous actress. The years and years of experience, practice, failure and almost giving up are rarely talked about or documented – in many cases also forgotten.

On the other side of the coin, “fake it ‘till you make it” has become such an overused expression that social media are littered with young people claiming to have found “instant success”. Very few of these declarations turn out to be the truth and many people find this out after many hours and in most cases tons of money following the advice of these snot-noses.

Therefore it was important for me to tell my story as truthfully as I can recall, but also document the details as my journey continues. As I write this, my journey started more than 6 years ago, while I only started documenting the details three years ago. Some of the details of the first three years are a little vague, but I still have the physical evidence of budgets and statements to help me with the details. I have made massive steps in the right direction, but it has not all been smooth sailing and I’m learning every day that my processes can still improve – I made mistakes along the way.

As this blog is a journey, I’ve written it in such a way as well. The steps that were required to get to where I am currently, are in the sequence that worked for me. It doesn’t mean it was the sequence that I tried the first time. I bumped my head many times trying to fast-track the process and then I had to go back a few steps.

In the same breath, I can tell you to follow the process step by step, but this was never written as an “I-know-best”, or “stick-to-my-advice-or”-blog. This was more meant to be a story of how I was able to turn around the most common problem that exists in our society and perhaps there are moments in my story that can help you in your journey.

We are all human; we are all stubborn; we are all proud. All of us have a unique way of doing things and if you want to skip a few steps because you feel you are past them, feel free to do so. If you make mistakes by doing so, it is perhaps what was meant to happen to be able to move forward. Bumping our heads is part of life. Learning that the same actions would have the same results sometimes take time to realise. The fact that a different approach might just have the desired results, sometimes take quite a few attempts.

With that said, this is the order that worked for me and therefore I wrote it in that specific order:

The Status Quo

Get the mindset ready for the journey

  • ONE Percenters – Why are some people more successful than others?
  • The no. 1 reason why very few South Africans retire early
  • Is it at all possible to change my mindset
  • Reading – Leaders are Readers. How reading helped change my life
  • Know yourself, become truly you

Make small changes

  • The perfect curve
  • Declutter your life
  • Learn to say NO

The Budget

  • Are you realistic about your budget (Check last 3 months statements)
  • Get rid of bad debt (the opposite of passive income)

Start saving

Investing tips

The Journey continues
